The Turkish hero Kemel Ataturk placed the country’s first iron and steel works at Karabuk in the mountains leading to the Black Sea coast in order to render the installations safe from air attack. The complex opened in 1937 and six of these Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0STs were supplied new for the occasion. The type remained active when this picture was made in August 1976, showing waste from the blast furnace being emptied down the slag bank.
