In 1944, Slapton Sands was the location for Exercise Tiger - a rehearsal for the imminent D-Day landings in Normandy. In the early morning of 28th April 1944, a group of German E-Boats stumbled across eight American landing craft full of servicemen lying in the bay, taking part in the exercise. They attacked and 946 US servicemen were killed.
