South African children work on a physic project in a classroom in Sophumelela School, Philippi township, Cape Town, South Africa. They sit at a wooden desk and write notes in their exercise books. These children have been selected as Hope Scholars, which is a program run by South African Education & Environment Project, to prepare learners academically and personally for university and beyond. It aims to invest an intensive and holistic program for top performing students from township communities where only 40% of students successfully graduate from high school.
