St George and the Dragon statue, inside the Storkyrkan Church, Stockholm, Sweden. The Storkyrkan (Great Church) is the oldest church in Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm. It is first mentioned in a written document dating from 1279. The statue is attributed to the German sculptor Bernt Notke and dates from 1489. It was commissioned to commemorate the victory of the Swedish regent Sten Sture at the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471. The statue also serves as a reliquary and contains relics said to be of St George and two other saints.
