Ulysses the trickster hero of Homer's Odyssy tried for years to get back to his island home of Ithaka and his wife Penelope. She was besieged by suiters wanting her land and each day she worked on a tapestry but each night she unpicked it so that it would never be finished. Ulysses returned as a beggar but only he could draw her husband's bow and so won her hand. Tellimanchus his son knew him because the trickster's old dog had remembered him
