It is over 15, 000 years since Lake Mungo had water in it, but aboriginal burial grounds near here contain human remains dating back over 40, 000 years. The Indigenous people of Australia lived and hunted here over 50, 000 years ago, making this an important place in the history of Australia and mankind in general. The heavily eroded landscape we see today is the result of heavy overgrazing by European sheep farmers.
