Village Hall. Church of Saint Peter, Addingham, North Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Europe.More information:
The sundial, in three panels, is by sculptor Fiona Bowley. When a new village hall was constructed, Anglo Saxon remains were discovered from the Christian community that lived and worshipped there circa 600AD. The three carved panels are based on a translation of The Venerable Bede’s “death song”. The left-hand panel is inscribed “We cannot be so wise…”. The central panel with the sundial is inscribed ”That we have no need to consider…”. The right-hand panel is inscribed “What will be decided for our souls.” Fiona studied Fine Art before completing a technical training as a stonemason and carver. She has worked within the construction industry as a freelance restoration carver and has 20 years experience working on public art commissions. During the late 15th century, Saint Peter's church was built to replace an earlier church, and Norman fabric was re-used inside the tower. The west tower and the wall of the south aisle were rebuilt between 1757 and 1760. The chancel was restored in 1875. Most of the church is in Neoclassical style, other than the north aisle, which is Perpendicular.
