The Moeraki Boulders are about 2 meters across. They have a honeycomb centre which you can see in the ones that have been broken open. They were formed in the cliffs millions of years ago around a central core of carbonate of lime crystals. This core attracted surrounding minerals. As the cliffs eroded the spherical boulders were exposed. They now lie on the beach where further erosion has exposed the network of surface veins.
