The first written record of Swayambhunath Temple was a 5th century stone inscription, Although a Buddhist site it is also revered by Hindus and many pilgrims visit the site at dawn to worship, climbing the many steps to the Stupa. It is also known as Monkey Temple due to the many wild monkeys there. It is a UNESCO World heritage site.
