The Baroque-style interior of Saint John's Co-Cathedral is extremely ornate, largely designed/decorated by Calabrian artist Mattia Preti. His design, on behalf of the Order of the Knights of St. John, is dedicated to the life of John the Baptist, The marble floor of the cathedral is a series of tombs housing about 400 knights and officers of the Order. The Oratory features two famous paintings by Caravaggio, including "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist." It was raised to a status equal to that of St. Paul's Cathedral in the city of Mdina (seat of the Archbishop of Malta) by a papal decree in 1816, hence it being named a co-cathedral. Valletta, Malta.
