The village of Toll Bar near Doncaster, South Yorkshire was one of many places hit by unprecedented floods in June 2007, after 5 inches of rain fell in 24 hours. The village was cut off for a week. The summer floods hit thousands of people and cost the government and insurance industry £billions. Global warming is likely to lead to far more frequent extreme weather events like this , with low lying areas becoming increasingly vulnerable. Man will have to learn to adapt.
