Modelled on the excavated remains of the Villa dei Papairi in Herculaneum, The Getty Villa in Malibu was built in the early 1970's as an ersatz homage to ancient Roman architecture. Closed in the mid 90's, renovation began in in 1997. The Villa was reopened in 2005/6.
