The former Priory Church of Our Lady & All Angels, Grade II* listed since 1987, was constructed 1897-1901 to the designs of Peter Paul Pugin, the younger son of the great gothic revival architect and designer A.W.N.Pugin. It was built for a community of Benedictine nuns, originally founded in 1630 at Montargis in France, who had come to England in 1792 after they were expelled from their original home during the French Revolution. In the second half of the 20th c., however, declining numbers obliged the nuns to seek more modest accommodation, and since 1966 the former convent has been occupied by Princethorpe College, a Catholic independent day school, which accepts pupils of all denominations, but prides itself on its strong Christian ethos. Alumni include Warwickshire and England cricketer Ian Bell.
