The Royal Black Institution, or the Royal Black Preceptory was formed in 1797, two years after the formation of the Orange Order. To join the Royal Black Institution one must first become a member of an Orange Order Lodge. The term Preceptory alludes to a subordinate house or community of the Knights Templars.
