This depicts a relief found on a sepulchral stone in the form of a vase. It is Attic (Greek) and dates to the third century B.C. The scene is a gymnasium. The youth has laid his clothes on a pillar, and stands on one foot, with hands clasped behind his back, balancing a ball on his raised thigh. A little slave-boy carrying a strigil and oil flask, ready for the bath that is to follow the exercise, stands before him. The book dates to 1895.
