More information:

In 1966 the National Bank of Greece decided to create a cultural foundation to support the Humanities, Fine Arts and Sciences in Greece and since then was housed in an Ottoman period architecture building, in Athens, fully restored by NBG. The program of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece or MIET (Morfotiko Idryma Ethnikis Trapezis) was cut by the military coup of that period and its firstly commented its activities after the restoration of Democracy in Greece, in 1974. Since then MIET selects and publishes works that cannot be undertaken by commercial printing houses, because of the high costs or other special reasons as well as extending its impressive contribution to the fields of Fine Arts and Sciences continuously enriching its collection of works of art and the organization of exhibitions. The cultural centre of MIET in Thessalonica opened in 1989, under the name of the NBCC (National Bank Cultural Centre) of Northern Greece and operated until 1997. It is hosted in an early 20th-century building, owned by a wealthy industrialist and banker, Deunme Mehmet Effendi Kapandji (Kapantzis). It is one of the few surviving villas, built in 1890, situated in then suburban district Exochon (or Exohon) Quarter of that time known also as “The Towers” or “The villas”, a luxurious holiday resort outside of the walls of the old city. The mansion consists of the main residence building and the tower on the right of the facade of the main entrance (Vassilisis Olgas ave.) which are linked together. In its current state it is visible from both, the East (V. Olgas ave.) and West (on Panagioti Regkou str. and from M. Alexandrou avenue). During its operation it contributed to the intellectual and artistic life of Thessaloniki presenting exhibitions on Art and History events, accompanied by lectures and courses.
