The medieval hamlet of Marvão perches on the top of an impressive granite escarpment in the Serra de São Mamede hills, in southern Portugal's Alentejo province. Built by King Dinis in about 1299, the fortified village overlooks the border with Spain and is one of the most picturesque destinations in the country.
