The seven voyages of Zheng He is the theme for the Chinese Lanterns at the Montreal Botanical GardenMore information:
The seven voyages of Zheng He is this year's theme for the Chinese Lanterns at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. Quebec - Canada. Zheng He was born into a Muslim family in Yunnan Province in China. Introduced to the Chinese Royal Court, he was given command of the Chinese navy. Emperor Cheng Zu sent Zheng He to lead a giant fleet of ships to Southeast Asia, carrying soldiers and a large quantity of trade goods. In the first half of the 15th century, the fleet reached the countries of Southeast Asia, east Africa and Arabia, initiating a first in the history of navigation and regarded as a great historical period in the Chinese history of trade and cultural exchanges. Zheng He's expedition was half a century earlier than those of the European navigators. Zheng He died in 1435 at the age of 65.
