Lord Lovat returned after the Boer War the hero of the highlands, for raising the Lovat Scouts as a British Regiment, and £500 was raised to commission a portrait of him to celebrate his, and the Lovat Scouts, success in the Boer War. But Lord Lovat insisted that the money be used as a memorial to the Lovat Scouts who lost their lives. Completed in 1905 the memorial was erected in Beauly, and is somewhat unique, as most war memorials in villages and town across the United Kingdom were built following World War One which was from 1914 to 1918
