More information:

Cicely M Barker produced her series of Flower Fairy books during the years of great upheaval in England, from the early 1920's through to the 1950's, which encompassed the torturous years of the Second World War. It was reported that people found solace in the idyllic fairyland that she depicted. Her skilful paintings and drawings were achieved by acute observation and careful concentration. She used real life plants, some provided, for the sake of accuracy by Kew Gardens. Her sister ran a kindergarten and the children became models for Barker, each one being carefully identified with the plant they were helping to depict. Of additional Interest is that the books have proved to be helpful with learning to read as related here by an internet commentator: "My nan helped to teach me to read with these books ... we would read together and that made these little books very special to me." The photograph as shown is from "Flower Fairies of the Trees" and shows "Willow" from an undated "Blackie" reprint.
