According to Greek mythology, Cupid, the god of love, fell in love with a princess named Psyche. He was immortal; she, mortal. So he arranged for her to come live in his palace and he would visit only in the dark of night. To bring her to the palace, Cupid sent the gentle west wind, known as Zephyrus. Psyche had no idea who he was until one night she shone an oil lamp on his face. A drop of hot oil fell on Cupid and woke him. The myth continues with many incidents until the two are reunited and marry. This 1905 illustration depicts the wind god Zephyrus, who had taken Psyche to the mountaintop where Cupid came to visit her, carrying Psyche from the palace down to her parents as she wished to see her family.
