Willem Barents (also Barentsz), who died 1597, was a Dutch navigator, noted for his exploration of and accuracy of his charts as he searched for the Northwest Passage across the Arctic. This illustration shows a cross-section of Barents' winter camp and is taken from the account of Barents' three voyages (1594-1597) by Dutch writer Gerald de Veer, which was published in 1598. Barents died of illness on the third voyage.
