Captain John Smith (1580 – 1631) is best remembered as one of the founding fathers of the English settlements in America in the early 17th century. As such he became the Governor of Jamestown in Virginia. He is also renowned for being saved from death by an Indian chief’s daughter Pocahontas. He was born in Willoughby in Lincolnshire, UK, c.1580, and there are still several items to associate him with the area.
