Construction (circa 1979) of underground tanks for the storage of high-level, liquid radioactive waste at Hanford, Washington, USA. The tanks are being constructed with two carbon steel shells. The space between the walls will be monitored to check for leakage from the inner tank. Heat distribution within each tank will also be recorded. The Hanford "tank farm" will accommodate 20 tanks, each vessel having a capacity of 1 million gallons of liquid waste.
