It was in production until 1996 and was worldwide the biggest coking plant at this time. You need 10,500 t of coal to produce the 8000 t of coke each day. The coke-oven gas was used to heat the oven itself and to heat the city of Essen. Other parts of the gas was used in the chemical industry. The plant started in the years 1957-1961 with 192 coke ovens. Later the number increased to 304. You see here the ovens with the number range from 198 up to 207.
