Kashgar or Kashi is an oasis city with approximately 350, 000 residents in the western part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is the administrative centre of Kashgar Prefecture which has an area of 162, 000 km² and a population of approximately 3.5 million. A major stopping point on the silk route Kashgar is now home to an important Muslim community (Uyghurs). In order to boost the economy in Kashgar region, the government classified the area a Special Economic Zone in May 2010. At present, it is estimated to attract more than one million tourist visitors annually.
