The cathedral was designed on the basis of an earlier structure, and completed between 1215 and 1263 by Giovanni Pisano. It belongs, therefore, to the full phase of the Gothic style. It has a Latin cross plan with a transept, a dome and a bell tower. The base of the dome is octagonal and is circulated only above the supporting columns. The lantern atop the dome was added by the famous Baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
