Jeffries (1875 - 1953), nicknamed "The Boilermaker", won the world title by knocking out defending champion Bob Fitzsimmons on June 9 1899 in Brooklyn, New York, and defended the crown several times before retiring undefeated in 1905. He made a comeback in the so-called "Fight of the Century" against Jack Johnson, the first black World Heavyweight Champion, at Reno, Nevada, on July 4 1910, but was soundly beaten and the bout was stopped in the 15th round.
