Vintage photo of British Conservative statesman Arthur James Balfour (1st Earl of Balfour) standing next to US Secretary of State Robert Lansing (right of picture) during a trip to the USA in 1917. Balfour (1848 - 1930) was Prime Minister of the UK from 1902 - 1905 and subsequently served as Foreign Secretary from 1916 - 1919, the position he held at the time of this photo. He famously authored the Balfour Declaration of 1917 which supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Lansing (1864 - 1928) was a lawyer by profession and an authority on international law who served as US Secretary of State from 1915 to 1920. Photo by Bain News Service.
