Photograph by David Coleman. The Washington Monument, a towering obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, DC, stands as an enduring tribute to America's first president, George Washington. Completed in 1884, this iconic structure rises 555 feet (169 meters) into the sky, dominating the city's skyline and serving as a focal point of the nation's capital. Designed by architect Robert Mills, the monument is constructed primarily of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss. Its distinctive shape—a flat-topped pyramid atop a tall shaft—was inspired by Egyptian obelisks and reflects the neoclassical and Egyptian Revival styles popular in 19th-century America. The monument's construction spanned nearly four decades, interrupted by the Civil War and funding issues. This pause in construction is visible in the slight color variation of the marble about one-third of the way up the obelisk. Today, visitors can ascend to the observation deck at 500 feet via elevator, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding landmarks. Situated on the National Mall, the Washington Monument is central to many of the capital's significant events and celebrations, including Independence Day fireworks and the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Its grounds, part of the larger National Mall, serve as a gathering place for public demonstrations, concerts, and commemorations.
