More information:

Wearmouth road bridge was opened in 1929 connecting Monkwearmouth on the north side to Sunderland, over the river Wear, on the south. In the background is the wrought iron railway bridge that was completed in 1879. The road bridge was designed by civil engineers Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by the construction company of Sir William Arrol & Co, who also built the Forth railway bridge.
