It was founded in 1931 with 700 works of art by Gertrude Vanderbilt after the Metropolitan rejected his collection of works by contemporary American artists . It forms one of the world's most important collections of American art of the twentieth century. The permanent collection of 12, 000 works including paintings , sculptures , multimedia installations, drawings, prints and photographs and growing. Apart from the hopper and collections Marsh, the Whitney has the largest collection of works by Alexander Calder in museums , ranging from the ever popular pieces Circus Surreal Calder and inspiration 1940 , to phones large scale and stable . Others in background concentrations of major holdings include Marsden Hartley , Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Burchfield, Gaston Lachaise , Louise Nevelson , and Agnes Martin.
