WORK ON IMPERIAL PALACE NEARS END A massive repair operation on the roof of China's Imperial Palace is close to completion. The famous building in the country's capital Beijing was previously known as the Forbidden City and is often labelled the Palace Museum. The ancient wooden structure once housed the Ming and Qing dynasties and is the largest and most complete historical palace in the country. Construction on the palace began in 1406 under the reign of Ming emperor Yongle and took 14 years to finish. The building saw 24 emperors rise and fall and is still mostly intact today. A repair operation was launched in 2002 and parts of the building are due to reopen to visitors in June (08) - although the complete restoration won't be completed until next year (09). (LR/WN/TN)
