A late 19th century view of massed sailing ships in the harbour at Whitehaven, a town and port on the west coast of Cumbria, historically in Cumberland, England. With a growing export of coal through the harbour from the 17th century onwards it also became a major port for trading with the American colonies, and was, after London, the second busiest port of England by tonnage from 1750 to 1772. However, the port's trade waned rapidly when ports with much larger shipping capacity, such as Bristol and Liverpool, began to take over its main trade.
