An old engraving of agricultural gang of women and children working on a farm in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. One small child looks to have been taken ill or suffering from exhaustion. Agricultural gangs were groups of women, girls and boys organised by an independent gang-master, under whose supervision they executed agricultural piece-work for farmers in certain parts of England for a payment negotiated between the gangmaster and farmer. Much suffering resulted from a nomadic life and the poor treatment by gangmasters, often involving long hours for poor pay. An old engraving of Colvin’s hydraulic milking machine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. In 1860, Lee Colvin invented the first hand-held pump device and in 1865 patented a machine with a pump mechanism. It was operated via a belt drive (top right). The cow milkers were worked by pumps that oscillated with the natural movement of a calf suckling. The milk was collected in churns below. It was the forerunner of today’s automatic milking systems (AMS), or voluntary milking systems (VMS), that were developed in the late 20th century. An old engraving of a horse-driven, walking cultivator. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A cultivator is a type of farm implement used for agitating, tilling and preparing the soil ready for planting or to disturb the soil between the crop rows to disrupt weed growth. The name can refer to frames with teeth (also called shanks) that pierce the soil as they are dragged through it. Some machines use rotating disks or teeth to achieve the same result. Walking cultivators were replaced by heavier, ride-on versions, especially where the fields were larger.
