An old engraving showing a side and above view of Richard Trevithick’s steam carriage of 1803. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The London Steam Carriage was an early high-pressure, steam-powered road vehicle constructed by Trevithick (1771–1833) and patented in 1802. The next year the ‘London Steam Carriage’ was driven about 10 miles (16 km) through the streets of London, with seven or eight passengers, at a speed of 4–9 mph, the streets having been closed to other traffic. Later Trevithick and a colleague crashed the carriage and it was scrapped. An old engraving showing Clegg’s atmospheric railway in the 1830s. It is from a book of the 1880s. An atmospheric (or pneumatic) railway uses differential air pressure to propel a train. The Samuda brothers and Samuel Clegg developed a system. In 1840 they leased track in west London. The lead carriage had a piston inserted in a tube between the rails. The pipe’s leather flap opened in front of the piston and sealed again behind it (bottom illustrations). A pumping station at the railhead created a vacuum in the tube ahead of the train. Air pressure behind the piston pushed a train forward. A portrait of John Francis who in 1842 made two unsuccessful attempts to murder Queen Victoria in her open carriage. Riding down the Mall, Prince Albert reported seeing “a little, swarthy, ill-looking rascal” point a pistol at them and pulling the trigger which failed to fire. Albert himself reported it to the police. The next day plain clothes officers were in the crowd when a shot rang out as the convoy travelled through the parks. John Francis an unemployed carpenter was sentenced to be hanged and beheaded – Queen Victoria personally commuted his sentence to transportation to Australia. An old engraving of the Bath-Bristol mail coach, England, UK in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. It is pulling up outside a hotel, The King’s Head. A mail coach is a stagecoach that is used to deliver mail. John Palmer of Bath (1742–1818) was a theatre owner and was an instigator of the British system of mail coaches. Mail coaches were slowly phased out during the 1840s and 1850s, their role eventually replaced by trains as the railway network expanded.
