An old engraving of busy river traffic on the River Ouse, York, North Yorkshire, England, UK in the Victorian era. The city is known for its famous historical landmarks such as York Minster (here in the background) and the city walls. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre. In the 18th and 19th centuries, there was considerable commercial traffic on the river, mainly from downstream Selby. The Ouse Bridge was the main river crossing. Several versions were built. The bridge here is the New Ouse Bridge, designed by Peter Atkinson the younger, completed in 1821. An old engraving showing a plan for the Hudson River east bank frontage along West Street, New York City, USA c.1870. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. New York City needed more capacity for shipping. A series of piers were eventually designed by the architectural firm of Warren and Wetmore. The complex was a row of grand buildings embellished with pink granite facades with piers behind forming the docking points for ocean liners of Cunard Line and White Star Line from the early 1900s. The piers are now used by the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex.
