USA: Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (10 April 1794 - 4 March 1858). Portrait, c. 1858. Matthew Calbraith Perry was a Commodore of the U.S. Navy who compelled the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854, when he threatened to bombard Edo (Tokyo) with his ships should they resist. Perry had commanded ships in several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). His advocacy for the modernisation of the U.S. Navy led to him being called 'The Father of the Steam Navy'.
