An old engraving of a horse-driven, walking cultivator. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A cultivator is a type of farm implement used for agitating, tilling and preparing the soil ready for planting or to disturb the soil between the crop rows to disrupt weed growth. The name can refer to frames with teeth (also called shanks) that pierce the soil as they are dragged through it. Some machines use rotating disks or teeth to achieve the same result. Walking cultivators were replaced by heavier, ride-on versions, especially where the fields were larger. An old engraving of the ‘Champion’ harvester or reaper. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The illustration shows the implement being used as a mower (top), a dropper (centre) and a self-baler (bottom). A reaper is a farm implement or person that reaps (cuts and often gathers) crops (usually cereals) at harvest time. Most modern mechanical reapers cut the grass; most also gather it. Mechanical reapers substantially changed agriculture from their appearance in the 1830s until later that century, when they evolved into ‘combined’ machines. An old engraving of a man at a furze bruiser (or gorse crusher) in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Gorse (Ulex europaeus) was valued as a winter food for horses and cattle. Gorse is found on poor land where little else of nutritional value grows – at one time it was cultivated for this purpose. However, it (and other kinds of rough feed) had to be crushed or bruised. Spiny gorse foliage was beaten with wooden mallets until mechanical crushers with studded cylinders (as shown here) arrived. An old engraving of Howard’s steam plough c.1870. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. Unlike the better-known Fowlers, the Howard machine used a pair of winding drums. This allowed a single engine and an anchored return pulley to plough (the Fowler system used a pair of engines, each one pulling alternately). This ‘roundabout’ system employed snatch-block anchors at the corners plus rollers (rope porters) along the straight runs to avoid the rope snagging. James and Fred Howard of Bedford, England, (later known as Howards) were makers of agricultural machinery and steam traction engines. An old engraving of Fowler’s steam plough c. 1860. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. John Fowler (1826–1864) was an English engineer, a pioneer in the use of steam engines for ploughing and digging drainage channels. Fowler experimented with pulleys and winches pulling ropes attached to a plough. He created a plough that could be used in either direction without having to be turned round. It had two ploughs in a ‘see-saw’ arrangement. One of the blades would be swung down to make contact with the soil. The next furrow would be ploughed by the second blade going back the other way. This painting, titled The Farmer's Daughter, was done by the Scottish portraitist and painter of domestic and historical subjects William Quiller Orchardson (1832-1910).
