1980s, a young woman attempting to get on a penny-farthing bicycle, being held steady by some male helpers. Also known as the 'high wheeler' - as can be seen why in the picture - the machine was the first to be called a 'bicycle'. The 'ordinary' as it was also known as, had a large front wheel providing speed and comfort but became obsolete with the new 'safety' bicycles from the 1880s, which provided similar speed, comfort from their pneumatic tyres and with a reduced danger due far lower height to fall from. The name came from the British ''penny' and 'farthing' coins and symbolic of its era Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/image-license-details/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/1980s-a-young-woman-attempting-to-get-on-a-penny-farthing-bicycle-being-held-steady-by-some-male-helpers-also-known-as-the-high-wheeler-as-can-be-seen-why-in-the-picture-the-machine-was-the-first-to-be-called-a-bicycle-the-ordinary-as-it-was-also-known-as-had-a-large-front-wheel-providing-speed-and-comfort-but-became-obsolete-with-the-new-safety-bicycles-from-the-1880s-which-provided-similar-speed-comfort-from-their-pneumatic-tyres-and-with-a-reduced-danger-due-far-lower-height-to-fall-from-the-name-came-from-the-british-penny-and-farthing-coins-and-symbolic-of-its-era-image340527007.html

An old engraving of a man and woman riding a tandem bicycle in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This amusing image has the woman holding a parasol and sits on the rear seat of the bike in a side-saddle position – the man is maybe doing most of the peddling! Many types of bicycle were invented during the Victorian era – varying in design from the really useful to the fanciful and amusing. 1950s, bike taxi, India, a mother and several children getting a ride in the back of cycle rickshaw being ridden through a dusty street by a male driver in barefeet. This small-scale local transport, a kind of hatchback tricycle, would carry passengers on a for-hire basis and so was known by several names; bike taxi, velo taxi, trishaw or hatchback bike. Cycle rickshaws originated in the 1880s. By the late 1920s, they were widely used in Singapore and by 1950 were found everywhere across South and East India. There are several different designs, in India, the passengers sit behind the driver. An old engraving of a man riding a ‘water velocipede’, a pedalo-type bicycle/boat, in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The man sits astride a casing containing a paddle wheel he drives via the foot pedals. The steering is controlled by the handle bar operating the rudder by ropes and pulleys. He has two well-dressed female passengers onboard. Many types of bicycle were invented during the Victorian era – varying in design from the really useful to the fanciful and amusing.
