A late 19th century view of the neoclassical 18th century Custom House alongside the River Liffey in Dublin, Ireland. In 1781 James Gandon was appointed architect, after Thomas Cooley, the original architect on the project died. Construction started in 1781 and for his assistants Gandon chose Irish artists such as Meath stone-cutter Henry Darley, mason John Semple and carpenter Hugh Henry. Every available mason in Dublin was engaged in the work. When it was completed and opened for business on 7 November 1791, it had cost £200,000 to build – a considerable sum at the time. Japan: Kaguya -hime, immortal moon maiden. Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Yoshu Chikanobu (1838-1912), 1891. The oldest known Japanese narrative, this sad fairy tale dates back to the 9th or 10th century. In this tale Kaguya-hime was found inside a bamboo stalk by a bamboo cutter, who took her home and raised her as his daughter. She eventually returns to her people on the moon. Toyohara Chikanobu, better known to his contemporaries as Yōshū Chikanobu, was a prolific woodblock artist of Japan's Meiji period. His works capture the transition from the age of the samurai to Meiji modernity.
