Operation Market Garden consisted of two distinct parts - airborne forces and land forces. The airborne forces were the 'Market' part and the land forces the 'Garden'. 'Market' involved the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the British 1st Airborne Division. Contained within the latter was the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade Group Commanded by General Stanislaw Sosabowski. They were planned to drop on the second day and to re-inforce action at the Arnhem road bridge. Things did not work out like that.
