An old engraving of King Richard I at the Battle of Jaffa, Israel in 1192. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. The Battle of Jaffa was the final battle of the Third Crusade, one of a series of campaigns between the army of Sultan Saladin and the Crusader forces led by King Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart). Richard leapt into the sea and waded through the waves to reach the shore. The King led his troops into battle. The Muslim army began to panic. Saladin's fleeing army escaped. An old engraving of Eleanor of Castile (1241–1290). Eleanor was an English queen consort, the first wife of Edward I, whom she married as part of a political arrangement to give English sovereignty over Gascony in Europe. The marriage was known to be particularly close and Eleanor travelled extensively with her husband. She was with him on the Ninth Crusade, when he was wounded at Acre. When she died in Lincolnshire, her grieving husband famously ordered a stone cross to be erected at each stopping-place on their journey back to London, ending at Charing Cross.
