Simone Hartung weighs a small hedgehog at the hedgehog ward in Neuzelle, Germany, 02 December 2014. For five years Simone and Klaus Hartung have been running a private hedgehog ward. The couple takes care of injured, sick, or very small hedgehogs. 20 prickly friends will be spending the winter here. Some are already in hibernation, wrapped up between warm strips of paper. This coming spring they will all be sent back into the wild. According to Simone Hartung, a hedgehog must weigh at least 500 grams before it can begin hibernating, in order to survive the winter. Storkow, Germany. 15th Mar, 2019. Young glass eels are set with a landing net in a water bucket on the area of the fishery Köllnitz. On the same day around 45,000 glass eels were placed in the water of the Groß Schauener Seenkette. The small transparent eels are about seven centimeters in size and weigh 0.3 grams. Born in the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean, they needed three years to cross the European coasts with the help of the Gulf Stream. There the eels are fished every year and brought into the European inland.
