East Africa: Four African porters carrying a large elephant tusk, possibly in Zanzibar or Mombasa, 19th century. Ivory is a term for dentine, which constitutes the bulk of the teeth and tusks of animals such as elephants, when used as a material for art or manufacturing. Ivory is little used today, but has been important since ancient times for making a range of items, from ivory carvings to false teeth, fans, dominoes, piano keys and billiard balls. Egypt: Screened windows decorated with arabesques on a private house with date palm, late 19th century drawing. An element of Islamic art usually found decorating the walls and window screens of mosques and Muslim homes and buildings, the arabesque is an elaborate application of repeating geometric forms that often echo the forms of plants, shapes and sometimes animals. A 19th Century view of Aden, a city since 2015 and the temporary capital of Yemen, located by the eastern approach to the Red Sea (the Gulf of Aden). Aden's natural harbour lies in the crater of a dormant volcano, which now forms a peninsula joined to the mainland by a low isthmus. This harbour, Front Bay, was first used by the ancient Kingdom of Awsan between the 5th and 7th centuries BC. The modern harbour is on the other side of the peninsula. Aden gives its name to the Gulf of Aden.
