This 1988 photograph shows the ruins of the historic hillside mill of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company that was in operation from 1917 to 1944 near downtown Juneau, the capital of Alaska, USA. The mine produced 90 million tons of gold-bearing ore, and was one of the largest mines in the world at the time. Since this picture was taken, the forest of alder trees continued to grow and hide these mine buildings that earlier had been burned by vandals. In the foreground is the Gastineau Channel that serves as a marine highway to Juneau, a water-bound city and cruise ship tourist destination.
