An old engraving of a 1775 American twenty-dollar bill. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. From June 1775 to 1779 Congress ordered 11 editions of ‘Continental Currency’ to the amount of 226 million Spanish milled Dollars. These bills constituted 82% of the federal government’s income during this period. At first the currency circulated at a par with the Spanish milled dollar (or the equivalent in gold or silver). An old engraving of a 1775 American 24-shilling bill of credit. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. Bills of credit are documents similar to banknotes issued by a government that represent a government's indebtedness to the holder. After the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775, Massachusetts was the first colony to officially issue bills of credit to finance her militia and support the war effort. The colonies (and states) continued to put out their paper money in direct competition with Continental currency.
