. English: These stories from the history of ancient Greece begin with myths and legends of gods and heroes and end with the conquests of Alexander the Great. The book is accessible and well organized, but it is considerably more detailed than some other introductory texts. It covers Greek history from the age of Mythology to the rise of Alexander, but because of its length we do not recommend it for 5th grade or younger. It is an excellent reference, thoroughly engaging, and a good candidate for a somewhat older student's first foray into Greek history. Not mentined. The Acropolis of Athens, c1930. By Donn Philip Crane (1878-1944). The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located above the city of Athens, Greece. A Spartan nurse takes a baby, who has been condemned as too weak to live, to Mount Taygetos to die. By Donn Philip Crane (1878-1944). The first century writer Plutarch (46-119) explains that Sparta had a ritual by which newborn babies were judged by the elders, and those thought unfit to live were left at the foot of Mount Taygetos. However, no other source speaks of this Spartan practice, and no infant remains have been found at this site.
