RMD8JJN9–Oracle-Bone Inscriptions - Yin Ruin in Anyang, Henan province.
An ox scapula treated for oracle taking, excavated in 1971 at Anyang, Honan. The scapula shows small pits gouged with a chisel to the edge of which a heated bronze point has been applied. From the shape of the forked cracks so caused on the other side of the bone answers were read to the questions which are inscribed. Among the cracks a characteristic line with a short spur gave the shape for the ideograph pu 'to take an oracle'. The inscribed sentences the proper choice of animal victims for sacrifice to ancestors denoted by the number of a day (their offering day) in the ten day cycle.
