Following the largest expedition in the Peloponnesian War and their defeat in the sea battle in Syracuse harbour in 413 BC, 40,000 Athenians and allied troops retreated. The Syracusans blocked the planned route through Acreaen Cliff Pass, and the Athenians were forced back to their starting point. Demosthenes and his men began a night march in a different direction, but the Syracusans bombarded the Athenian troops with javelins until Demosthenes surrendered. Meanwhile the Syracusans caught up with Nicias and his half of the army and bombarded them until they also surrendered.
